The plot revolves around a group of eleven death row inmates who are enlisted by the Shibata clan to protect a strategically significant fortress in Niigata from the Imperial army’s advance. The group is betrayed when the Shibata clan changes allegiances, leaving them to battle against insurmountable odds after being promised freedom upon success. The movie looks at issues of honor, loyalty, and the hazy boundaries between good and evil.
