“Girl in the Basement” is about Sara Cody, a teenage girl who fantasizes about being independent. Once Sara turns 18, she intends to move out of the house, much to the displeasure of her strict father, Don. Don doesn’t approve of Sara moving out, so he locks Sara in the basement off of their house, pretending that she just ran away. Sara is kept captive for years. She is abused and abused, she is isolated away from society, and eventually she gives birth to multiple children from Don. Her mother and the world think she ran away. This story tells of the horrors of Sara’s life underground, the psychological horrors she endures, and her will to live. After over twenty years, Sara’s nightmare finally ended when one of her children required medical attention, which ultimately led to the truth being exposed. Don was arrested, and Sara was finally reunited with her family and the outside world.
