Baby Reindeer (2024) is a British psychological thriller and dark comedy mini-series that was created by and stars Richard Gadd originally, and was released on Netflix on April 11, 2024. The series is based on Gadd’s critically acclaimed one man show and is a raw and uncomfortable portrayal of obsession, trauma, and the many aspects of the human experience. The narrative follows Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd), a comedian with stage fright who works as a bartender in London, as his life spirals out of control when he offers a cup of tea to a distressed woman called Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning) during his shift at the bar in London. Largely based on an act of kindness, this act leads to an obsession worthy of a restraining order, as Martha stalks Donny in real life and on line. Not only does the harassment continue, but Donny also can’t escape Martha’s psychological grip, which leads his past trauma to surface and becomes obvious that Donny has suffered abuse and clearly has no idea how to manage the unfolding mess. The show examines themes of power, vulnerability, and untreated trauma.
