In this fictionalized account, Dick Turpin (Noel Fielding) is characterized as a caddish, and flamboyant, ‘figure’ who becomes the accidental leader of the Essex Gang. He dislikes violence, and would rather ‘perform’ than commit violence, but still wants to be the most infamous highwayman in all of England. The show follows Turpin and his assorted band of misfits on their misadventures, all while simultaneously being pursued by the self-declared thief-taker Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville) and the mysterious organization known only as The Syndicate.
